Turf Measurement

Measure the length and width of the bare soil area in your yard. We automatically add a 5% waste factor for trimming around curved garden beds and sidewalks.

How to Use the Sod Calculator

Installing sod is the fastest way to get a perfect green lawn. Because sod is a living, perishable product, you cannot order it in batches over a few weeks—you must order exactly what you need and lay it all on the same day.

  1. Measure the bare dirt: Walk the perimeter of your yard and measure the length and width of the areas you plan to cover in turf.
  2. Ignore small obstacles: Don't bother subtracting the area of small trees or tiny flower beds from your overall measurement. The slight overage will act as your necessary waste factor.

Sod Material Formula

Calculating sod is straightforward area math. We calculate the total square footage, multiply by 1.05 to account for trimming waste, and divide by the size of the rolls and pallets.

Step 1: Calculate Total Area
Yard Area = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Step 2: Add Waste Factor
Total Sod Required = Yard Area × 1.05

Step 3: Convert to Rolls & Pallets
Number of Rolls = Total Sod Required ÷ 10 sq ft
Number of Pallets = Total Sod Required ÷ 450 sq ft

Sod Example Calculation

You have a bare front yard that is 50 feet wide and 40 feet deep.

  • Yard Area: 50 × 40 = 2,000 sq ft.
  • Add 5% Waste: 2,000 × 1.05 = 2,100 sq ft.
  • Sod Rolls Needed: 2,100 ÷ 10 = 210 individual rolls.
  • Pallets Needed: 2,100 ÷ 450 = 4.66 pallets.

Conclusion: You should order 5 full pallets of sod to ensure you have enough coverage.

Pro Tips for Laying Sod

  • Water immediately: Sod farms harvest the grass on the morning of delivery. The root system has been severed and is in shock. As soon as you lay a section of sod, you must drench it in water. Do not wait until the entire yard is finished to start watering.
  • Stagger the seams: Never line up the short seams of the sod rolls in a continuous line. Stagger them like bricks on a wall. If seams run in a continuous line, water will erode a trench down the seam.
  • Use a lawn roller: Once the sod is laid, rent a water-filled lawn roller from the hardware store and roll the entire yard. This pushes the sod roots firmly against the topsoil below, removing air pockets that kill the roots.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in a roll of sod?

A standard small roll of sod from a garden center or farm is 2 feet wide by 5 feet long, covering exactly 10 square feet.

How much sod is on a full pallet?

While it can vary slightly by farm, a standard pallet of sod contains 45 rolls (covering 450 square feet) or 50 rolls (covering 500 square feet). Our calculator uses the standard 450 sq ft pallet for safety.

Do I need to add a waste factor?

Yes, you should add a 5% waste factor. When you lay sod, you must stagger the joints (like brickwork). You will also have to cut the sod with a machete or knife to curve around sidewalks, trees, and garden beds, resulting in scraps.

Do I need topsoil before laying sod?

If your existing soil is hard clay, rocky, or heavily compacted, you must spread at least 2 to 4 inches of fresh screened topsoil before laying sod. Sod roots cannot penetrate hardpan clay.
